Listening to my Inner Consciousness is something that I have been exploring on this amazing journey
Inner consciousness. Not "Higher". This is a thought that has been racing around my heart for a long while now. I have always had an issue with the expression "Higher Consciousness", because even if we are talking about an internal "self", I rebel at the term "higher" as it creates the feeling of ME being lower or less than. Words are conscious creators that have direct effect on ourselves and our environment. With that in mind (lol) I will call it my Inner Consciousness.
Through this journey I have recognized that many times my Inner Consciousness likes to communicate through music. So many times over the past couple of years I will here a particular song over and over again, on the radio, TV, movies, my children singing it.... then I will actually stop and LISTEN to the song, and I will find a HUGE revelation or message in it that is exactly what I needed to hear at that moment. The moment I get "the message" the song just disappears and I don't hear it again. It is almost as if the universe just keeps playing it over and over until I get the message. There have been times when my kids have watched the same scene in a movie over and over and over, until I finally take note of the song that is playing and as soon as I recognize it, they stop watching it.
I will admit that I was a little slow in recognizing this at the beginning and sometimes it took weeks for me to get it, lol, but these days I know instantly when a song jumps into my head, with no other influence behind it, that it's one of those type of messages. Yesterday was one of those days.
I was quietly puttering around the kitchen, getting dinner ready, when suddenly a song literally popped into my head..... playing very LOUDLY- loud enough that I literally stopped everything to pay attention to exactly what was playing in my head.
It was a song that I haven't heard in well over a decade, maybe even closer to two. I could hear the entire song, the music, lyrics, harmonies as if I was listening to the CD, which surprised me that I could even remember the words to the song considering how long it's been since I've listening to a recording of it.
This was the part that kept repeating itself over and over to me:
'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing
that river's flowing
The song is "Don't give up" by Peter Gabriel.
I immediately pulled the song up on YouTube and listened to it- listened very carefully as I knew there was some thing important in it.
The moment the song began, I felt an incredible longing, and as the lyrics were sung, I literally felt a huge weight of despondency, sadness, hopelessness, and grief over come me. Tears flowed down my face with the heaviness of the emotions, even though I knew that these emotions were not mine and that they were from an external source. I listened to the song to the very end, feeling the emotions so clearly and sharply. As it ended, I filed it away to review later.... I had dinner to make and no time time look into the message, nor whom it was for, until later.
For the rest of the evening the song played over and over in my mind and as I "heard" the words I realized who they were for and where the emotion had come from.
I am posting the song here to be heard. To listen and perhaps understand finally that it's not the end, but the beginning.
don't give up
'cause you have friends
don't give up
you're not the only one
don't give up
Tears are catharsis for the soul. They allow you to let go of the fear and sadness and grief and let it drain away till calm returns again.
I love you.
Don't give up.

don't give up
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good
rest your head
you worry too much
it's going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don't give up
please don't give up
you worry too much
it's going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don't give up
please don't give up
don't give up
'cause you have friends
don't give up
you're not the only one
don't give up
no reason to be ashamed
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up now
we're proud of who you are
don't give up
you know it's never been easy
don't give up
'cause I believe there's a place
there's a place where we belong
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up now
we're proud of who you are
don't give up
you know it's never been easy
don't give up

"Don't Give Up"
in this proud land we grew up strong
we were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail
no fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose
don't give up
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good
though I saw it all around
never thought I could be affected
thought that we'd be the last to go
it is so strange the way things turn
drove the night toward my home
the place that I was born, on the lakeside
as daylight broke, I saw the earth
the trees had burned down to the ground
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up
we don't need much of anything
don't give up
'cause somewhere there's a place
where we belong
rest your head
you worry too much
it's going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don't give up
please don't give up
'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing
that river's flowing
moved on to another town
tried hard to settle down
for every job, so many men
so many men no-one needs
don't give up
'cause you have friends
don't give up
you're not the only one
don't give up
no reason to be ashamed
don't give up
you still have us
