SOLAR UPDATE: CME Alert, Earthquake Alert, Volcano Alert

Heads up my friends!


We have a massive Filament just slightly towards the eastern limb of the sun- almost directly earth facing, AND we have a series of large Coronal Holes, running from the very north pole of the sun to the equatorial region.  We have no active flare zones at the moment, but I do expect that this Filament will rip off very soon- possibly throwing a huge CME that would be directly geoeffective towards earth.   Add to that the solar particle streams from the coronal hole and it could be a major combo.  We already have active solar X-rays streaming in.





We have seen a ridiculously HUGE amount of Earth quakes in the past 72 hours of magnitude 5 and UP and volcanoes erupting in 36 different locations globally.  IF this filament rips off with a CME launched, we could have yet another round of very powerful earthquakes.   The pacific circle is SERIOUSLY messed up right now!!!!









NEWS FLASH..... literally


Just less than an hour ago a smaller filament separated from the sun, and has produced an incoming CME (Coronal Mass Ejection)- I do not have the details yet of just how geoeffective the CME will be with Earth, but as soon as I have the information I will update this article.   The large Filament is still hanging on.... by a thread and I highly doubt it will last another day before it too separates from the Sun.   We also experienced a huge proton spike at around 2pm UTC ....Again, I will keep everyone updated as soon as I have new information.





This was just updated on Solarham:

A large filament located in the northeast quadrant is now in the process of lifting off of from the sun. Sometimes following such events, intense brightening within the chromosphere near the location of the eruption, also known as a hyder flare can take place. On the other hand, plasma may be reabsorbed by the sun with little to no coronal mass ejection (CME) produced. What will happen? Stay tuned to find out.

Before we move on from the Solar topic I want to share with you what we just saw 3 hours ago :




Not only did we have a full halo around the sun for HOURS today, when we took photos, we captured two different things.  First if you look at around 11o'clock on the sun disc you can see teh shadow of the HUGE filament that I have been discussing.  Also, there is a strange light streak in the sky just above the sun and beside the filament.  This is NOT a mar on the camera lens, not a reflection on the lens. This ...... light streak is in EVERY picture we took, no matter what angle  we snapped it from over the one hour period that we were taking pictures.   What is it?  Know idea.   We also have several pictures with white and pink.... dots/orbs....whatever, lol.   Interesting stuff!   I will also add that though you can't really see it in this picture the inner area between the rainbow aura and the sun itself was at least 5 shades darker than the sky that was outside of the Solar Aura.


As I mentioned in the Transpicuous News Weekend report,  Japan has just experienced some pretty amazing things. Such as a section of Hokkaido Island rising over 300 meters.... IN A DAY.  Dutchsinse' report below gives an excellent overview.

....Almost 7,000 miles away in Mexico, the Colima volcano blew its top after a period of relative calm. A steam and ash cloud rose two miles into the sky and the grumbling of the mountain could be heard in towns a few miles away.

In Guatemala the ‘Fire Mountain’ belched out lava and sent up a moderate ash cloud causing an ash fall over nearby towns. The explosions and shock waves occurring in the volcano can be felt by residents over 6 miles away. Doors and windows are reported to be rattling, but there has been no damage so far.

In Vanuatu the Yasur volcano is giving some cause for concern. Although the explosions are quite weak the continuous ash that is coming from the mountain is starting to build up on farming land.

Over to Italy, Mount Etna is putting on quite a display. The current eruption started a few days ago and has been getting stronger as time moves on. A massive eruption lit up the sky and disturbed residents yesterday. The ash cloud was high enough to see flights canceled. The lava flow was the biggest in years, and the town of Zafferana which lay in its path saw some damage. Lava diverters were put into place, and most of the town escaped unscathed.

In Indonesia a four mile high ash cloud is making life hard for residents. Mount Sinabung came back to life in 2010 after dormancy of hundreds of years. Occasionally coming to life after its 2010 awakening, the rumbling of the volcano prompted the evacuation of over 6000 people as scientists feared a major eruption. There has been no lava flows so far but the ash cloud is growing.

Still in Indonesia but on the island of Java this time, Mount Merapi exploded yesterday. Hundreds of people were killed when it last erupted in 2010. There is no news of casualties at this point.

So, we have eruptions big enough to prompt evacuations. Flights are canceled, and a new island pops up off the coast of Japan. I would have called that newsworthy myself but obviously I’m wrong. If I was right it would have been common knowledge right? Reports may have been on the news right?

So many volcanoes throwing so much gas, ash and particulates into the air can have an effect on climate, this is a scientific fact. I’m not saying that these volcanoes herald the start of a new ice age but the planet certainly seems to be getting a bit more active of late.


Continued large eruptions put a huge amount of particulate matter into the atmosphere, and these particles reflect sunlight away from earth and when there is enough of them the temperatures can drop.

The Mount Pinatubo eruption lowered temperatures by around 0.5°C across the Northern Hemisphere.

Considering that we are in a cooling period anyway, having so many volcanoes going off at the same time is not good. Aside from the devastating effects the lava and ash can have on the lives of those living near to them, the global impacts can be enormous.

Lost crops due to ash fall and lower temperatures can lead to hunger and famine, as happened after the Tambora eruption in 1815.

Economic losses due to lost crops and canceled flights runs into millions of dollars a day, as with the Icelandic eruption of Eyjafjallojkull (pronounced: aya fiat la u cud la) in 2010.

The spasms of the earth come without warning, but at the same time those spasms should be a wake up call to all of us that change can happen in the blink of an eye.

Better be prepared for it.

.... and Then there is CERN

Apparently, CERN ran into some "issues" this afternoon.    They had to dump both beams this afternoon after a problem with their Cryo in two areas.



And here are the Cryogenics stats and reports- seems that there was a sudden .... upspike that started at just after 2pm...... pretty much within the same time frame that the smaller Filament separated from the Sun and threw off the CME towards Earth




.... and I find it very interesting that timing.... the emergency dumping of the beams almost exactly when the filament ripped off and we had a huge proton spike..... yes..... very interesting.

Solar Update: Lights Camera Action!

The lovely Sol is dancing a tango again.  For the past week we've seen elevated levels of flares, leading up to yesterdays set of exciting set of boogie woogie disco moves.

In the past 48 hours we had 3 major flares- two from spot 1944- an M 7.2 and an X 1.2, and a parting shot from 1947 of M3.2 as it rotated off the western limb.  The Xflare by 1944 - which is Beta Gamma Delta- was interactive with 1946 right above it (Beta Gamma).  The X Class and M7.2 were both directly Earth facing and geoeffective.  1944 has also been spouting off constant C Class flares for the past 24 hours.

Yesterday saw a radiation storm above moderate levels and we are expecting the incoming CME to arrive tonight/tomorrow with a good chance of a geomagnetic storm between the 9th and 10th.  We saw the arrival of an earlier CME with a glancing blow to Earth on Tuesday.

NOAA is giving a risk 80% of M Class and 50% of X Class flares for today.... I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I give it 100% chance of an MClass flare today from 1944/6, and I expect we'll see 1946 evolve into Beta Gamma Delta in the next 24-48 hours as well.  We also have a good size Coronal Hole currently rotating into direct Earth View- the Solar Wind stream from that should reach earth Jan 12/13th.

Old spot 1928 is about to rotate back from the eastern limb- it hasn't been renumbered yet- and I'm keeping an eye on it, as it's looking rather grumpy from the current SDO view.

As usually, don't throw out your wireless electronics or cell phones- it's not their fault that they are confused today.  And mind your manners on the road.... road rage is always elevated during geomagnetic storms.  Be Yen!

Geoeffective Active Region 1944 (beta-gamma-delta) erupted with major solar flare measuring X1.2 at 18:32 UTC today. The event started at 18:04, peaked at 18:32 and ended at 18:58 UTC. A Type II radio emission was registered at 18:17 UTC with estimated velocity of 1064 km/s. Type II emissions occur in association with eruptions on the sun and typically indicate a coronal mass ejection is associated with a flare event.
This huge active region is almost perfectly positioned for geoeffective events.
A bright coronal mass ejection (CME) was generated - high latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.
At 10:03 UTC today this same region erupted with strong M7.2 solar flare.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to active levels on January 8, active to major storm levels on January 9 and unsettled to minor storm levels on January 10.
Forecasters estimate 80% chance for M-class, 50% chance for X-class and 99% chance for proton event in next 3 days (January 8 - 10).

Solar Update: ...Cha Cha Chaaaa!!!

So this time I was right and wrong!  Last night we had an M Class 2.9 flare and a few hours ago we had and X Class 1.7 flare with a very bright CME (Coronal Mass Ejection).  .... which I called yesterday.   The shocker is that BOTH flares came from a very unassuming 1882 (previously numbered 1862) that is just barely peeking around the western limb of our sun!  ... I didn't even see that one coming, lol!

On top of the firey dance of the sun, the first of 4 CME's has impacted earth, with 3 more coming over the next 24 hours (two later today, one tomorrow). So don't throw out your GPS or cel phone or TV remote if they are not exactly working properly today and tomorrow, lol. 

...and in response to there being 9 M Class and 1 X Class flares..... NOAA has raised it's Solar Flare Risk .... by a whopping 5%.   Seriously?  They are now saying 55% of M and 10% of X class flares.   Way to go guys.

On a side note:  This many CMEs that are directly earth facing DO have physical effects on Humans (and animals)- including headaches, dizziness, intense mood swings- and severe road rage is a scientific fact during solar storms and CMEs.   So keep your cool folks!

The Sol Tango: incoming CMEs and disorientating radio burst.

Our lovely Sol has been dancing a tango again for the past two weeks, and in the last two days has upped the tempo.  I've been watching the Solar activity for the past couple of weeks quite closely, and it's definitely been putting on quite the show!  I will say that I almost sprained my shoulder trying to pat myself on the back a little over a week ago when I was correct in my insistence that sun spot 1865 was going to blow a couple of M Class flares within the next 24 hours (even though the so called "experts" at NOAA disagreed) and exactly as I called it, we had three MClass flares following that, all with a 72 hour period.

(sorry, I might be a bit over caffeinated this morning, lol)

So on to this weeks Solar extravaganza.  While sun spot 1865 has disappeared to the back side of the sun (and degraded into a much less volatile spot), we have Sun spot 1875 that is geoeffective- meaning that it is now directly Earth Facing, with a Beta Gamma Delta configuration... which basically means that it is highly excitable and has a bad attitude (kinda like my 6 year old this morning, but that's another story).  In the past 4 days it's been tossing off several C and M class flares, but in the last 24 hours it has thrown off 3 M Class flares, M 1.0, M 1.0 and M 4.2.  The  M 4.2 definitely sent a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) our way.

Adding to the excitement is that a filament ripped off directly above spot 1875 yesterday which sent the strongest radio burst this solar cycle  (apparently it almost tossed one solar listener right out of his chair) and another CME that is also earth facing, though slightly northern glancing.

Starting at the end of today, the geomagnetic field of Earth will start to get somewhat unsettled and over the course of the next 2 days we could see solar induced geomagnetic storms on the planet.  Nothing to "worry about", but if your wireless printer doesn't want to work, or your GPS sends you too Timbuktu, and your cel phone starts dropping calls randomly.... well, it's not their fault.  This time.

I strongly suspect that we'll see at least one or two more M Class flares from spot 1875, with a good chance of a low X Class flare in the next 48 hours.   We also have spot 1877 rotating into view and while it's not as complex and grumpy as 1875, it's definitely worth watching as well.

... If I'm right, I'll let someone else pat me on the back this time, lol.

Another not so little dance from Sol

Sol's 1748 blasted of another X Class flare yesterday- with a corresponding filament breaking away on the almost opposite side of the sun.... For action there is an equal and opposite reaction ;)
The CME from this X1.2 Flare might give earth a slight glancing blow, but any flares from today forward will definitely be in line of sight of Gaia.

NOAA has again upgraded the flare watch to 80% for an MClass and 50% for an XClass flare in the next 24-48 hours.

1748 Flares Again (X1.2)
Sunspot 1748 does it again. For the fourth time, the active region has produced a major X-Class solar flare. The latest event measured X1.2 and peaked at 01:47 UTC. The eruption was associated with Type II and IV Sweep Frequency Events and a 10cm Radio Burst (Ten Flare) measuring 490 sfu. I will provide further updates regarding a possible Coronal Mass Ejection. CME Update: The latest X-Flare event did generate a Coronal Mass Ejection. Because the blast location is still not in prime position, a majority of the plasma was directed away from Earth. There does appear to be a very minor Earth directed component, however it should have only a minor effect on our geomagnetic field at best. Images below by LASCO C2.

Sun goes X Rated!

Another XClass flare just popped off a few hours ago with a pretty damn big CME- though mostly not Earth facing.

.... Not that I'm saying I know more than the scientists at NOAA..... but guys! Don'tcha think you should perhaps upgrade your Solar Flare Risks?  They've been 50% for an MClass and 5% chance of an XClass flare for the past 48 hours..... and we've already had 5 M Flares and 2 X Flares!!!

The Sun is showing real solar-maximum-like activity today. After 2 moderate solar flares last night, an X1.7 erupted at 02:15 UTC. It was followed by another M-class at 12:03 UTC and numerous C-class flares.
At 15:48 UTC, on May 13, 2013, a second major eruption started. Peak time was reached at 16:05 UTC and was measured as X2.86 solar flare. The source was again, an active region located around the eastern limb. This region will most likely continue to produce eruptions as it turns into Earth view today.
A 10cm Radio burst was associated with the event. A type II and type IV radio emissions were also associated.  Type IV emissions occur in association with major eruptions on the sun and are typically associated with strong Coronal Mass Ejections and solar radiation storms.
This was second major solar flare of the day. The first one was strongest this year, this second one was even stronger and now holds the record of strongest solar flare this year so far.

Another X-Class Solar Flare (X2.8)
Another major X-Class solar flare, this time peaking at X2.8 was observed at 16:05 UTC. Another Strong Radio Blackout resulted on the sunlit side of Earth. The source is again the active region rotating into view off the east limb. The latest event generated a Coronal Mass Ejection that looks to be directed mostly towards the east and away from Earth. The solar rotation will continue to carry the Sunspot into a more direct Earth view this week. Images and video below.Stay Tuned for updates.

Sol Goes on a 72 hour Bender

Well guys, I wasn't going to be posting this morning, but upon seeing that we had an XClass Solar Flare last night, preceded by 4 MClass flares in the last 72 hours..... I dropped everything to write this up.

Beyond the 4 MClass and 1 XClass flares in the past 72 hours, we've also had two filaments rip off, both releasing CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections).  The last CME should give Earth a glancing blow on the 15th of this month.

The XClass flare last night- X 1.7 was a huge visual display (that someone captured on their personal telescope- image below), created a very big R3 radio black out on the sunlit side of earth when it happened.  The CME from this flare will NOT be Earth facing, not even a glancing blow.

We currently have 8 active regions that are Earth facing and two more regions that are now rotating into view- one of those regions is where the XClass flare came from last night.

UPDATE!!!!  We just had another MClass flare a few moments ago!! An M 1.3 flare- I do not have details yet and will post them when I get them.

X-Class Solar Flare
A major X-Class Solar Flare peaking at X1.7 was observed around an active region hiding off the east limb at 02:15 UTC [VIDEO]. This event was also responsible for a strong R3 Level Radio Blackout on the sunlit side of Earth. This region is currently seething with activity and will begin to rotate into view within the next 24 hours. Because of the sunspot location, any associated Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) should be directed away from Earth. Solar Update
Below is an updated image of the visible solar disk on Monday morning. Solar activity is now at strong levels thanks to one X-Class Flare and multiple M-Class events around a new sunspot rotating into view off the east limb. The X1.7 Solar Flare at 02:15 UTC was responsible for a strong R3 Level Radio Blackout, a 10cm Radio Burst (TenFlare) measuring 320sfu and Type II Radio Emission (Sweep Frequency Event) with an estimated velocity of 2347 km/s. A bright Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) was produced, but directed away from Earth. We will get a better view at the active region as the day progresses. GOES Solar X-Rays continue to detect several C-Class flares, each of which are centered around the new region. There will remain a chance for at least M-Class flares today. Other regions to keep an eye today will be Sunspots 1745 and 1746. Each have a Beta-Gamma magnetic configuration and could produce a moderate solar flare as well. With the rash of Earth facing Sunspots, the 10.7cm Solar Flux is expected to increase.

A new active region behind east limb produced powerful X1.7 solar flare on May 13, 2013 at 02:15 UTC. This event was associated with  strong R3 Radio Blackout AlertType II Radio Emission and 10 cm Radio Burst. 
This was the strongest solar flare of the year so far.
Strong R3 radio Blackout alert signals possible wide area blackout of HF radio communication, loss of radio contact for about an hour on sunlit side of Earth and degradation of low-frequency navigation signals for about an hour.
Type II Radio Emission occur in association with eruptions on the sun and typically indicate a coronal mass ejection is associated with a flare event.

10cm radio burst indicates that the electromagnetic burst associated with a solar flare at the 10cm wavelength was double or greater than the initial 10cm radio background. This can be indicative of significant radio noise in association with a solar flare. This noise is generally short-lived but can cause interference for sensitive receivers including radar, GPS, and satellite communications.

This new region is currently very active and it should begin to rotate into view within the next 24 hours. Considering its location any associated Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) should be directed away from Earth.
This new active region already produced two moderate M-class solar flare, registered as M1.9 at 20:31 UTC and M1.2 at22.:44 UTC
There are currently 10 numbered regions on the disk. Regions 1745 and 1746 have Beta-Gamma magnetic configuration and are capable of producing more strong flares, and six more active regions developed Beta magnetic field and are coming into center of the disk in the coming days.

M6.5 Solar Flare + CME / Proton Levels
The strongest solar flare in quite some time took place within the past couple of hours around Sunspot 1719. The moderately strong event measuring M6.5 took place at 07:16 UTC. A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is now visible in the latest STEREO Ahead and STEREO Behind COR2 imagery. Because 1719 is now squarely facing Earth, the plasma should be directed this way. This will raise the chances of geomagnetic storming by this weekend.

Induced Currents – Power grid fluctuations can occur. High-latitude power systems may experience voltage alarms.
Spacecraft – Satellite orientation irregularities may occur; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites is possible.
Radio – HF (high frequency) radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes.
Aurora – Aurora may be seen as low as New York to Wisconsin to Washington state.

CME heading this way folks!

Hold onto your socks ladies and gentlemen, it could be a fun filled weekend as our lovely Sol is in party mode again.

NOAA is showing only a 15% chance of M Class and 1% chance of X Class flares, but as yesterdays massive CME shows, Flares are only one aspect of the Suns energetic activities.  Yesterday Sol had a filament rip off, sending a huge fast moving CME directly towards Earth- due to hit sometime today.  I'm still watching for updates on timing.

C5.8 Solar Flare
Who needs a Sunspot to generate a solar flare? A rapid release of energy measuring C5.8 was detected around a spotless plage located in the northeast quadrant. The quick blast was also associated with Type II Sweep Frequency event with a velocity of nearly 1700 km/s. More updates to follow if necessary.
