8 000 scientific papers link refined white sugar to chronic disease

8 000 scientific papers link refined white sugar to chronic disease

8 000 scientific papers link refined white sugar to chronic disease
One of the worst things you can do to your body is feed it sugar - not necessarily natural sugar like the kind found in fruit, but refined sugar. A team of scientists from the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) recently pored through more than 8 000 scientific papers on how sugar affects the body and came to the conclusion that it not only makes people fat but also makes them sick.
The project, which has been dubbed SugarScience, exposes sugar as a primary culprit in the formation of metabolic disease, which can lead to conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Lead author Laura Schmidt, a UCSF School of Medicine professor, says her team's findings are comprehensible -- sugar is highly toxic to the body and vital organs, including the liver.
According to their investigation, nearly three-quarters of all packaged and processed foods contain added sugar. This sugar is typically listed under 61 different names, including things like high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), dextrose, evaporated cane juice and sucrose. It is often difficult to identify added sugar because of this, and current regulatory requirements don't mandate that suggested daily values of both natural and added sugar be identified.
A full listing of the 61 common names for sugar is available at the following link on the right-hand side of the page: SugarScience.org.
The result is millions of people regularly consuming far more sugar than they should be, leading to metabolic syndrome, a classification of risk factors associated with a host of chronic illnesses. If left to run its course, metabolic syndrome can lead to early death in the form of liver failure, heart attack, blood clots and various other life-threatening conditions.
"Too much sugar causes chronic metabolic disease in both fat and thin people," said pediatric endocrinologist Robert Lustig, a member of the SugarScience team and author of Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease, pointing out that obesity is an entirely separate issue from the extensive bodily damage caused by sugar consumption.
"And instead of focusing on obesity as the problem, we should be focusing on our processed-food supply."

SugarScience project exposes "all calories are equal" myth as scientific fraud

Part of the problem is that many people still don't realize just how much sugar they're actually consuming. According to Medical Xpress, the average American consumes nearly 20 teaspoons, or about 78 grams, of sugar daily, which is far more than the maximum level recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA).
A single 12-ounce can of soda pop contains as much as 9 teaspoons, or 36 grams, of added sugar, which is the AHA's maximum recommended daily level for adult men. Adult women, says the group, should consume no more than 6 teaspoons, or 24 grams, of sugar daily, while children should limit themselves to between 3 and 6 teaspoons, or 12-24 grams, daily.
The best way to consume sugar is naturally, of course, whether it be in fruit, vegetables or unprocessed dairy products. Fruits and vegetables contain dietary fiber and other nutrients that help buffer how quickly sugar is processed, protecting organs like the pancreas from having to work overtime to produce insulin, which can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes.
SugarScience's research also reiterated that not all calories are the same, as is commonly believed in the mainstream.
"SugarScience shows that a calorie is not a calorie but rather that the source of a calorie determines how it's metabolized," explains Lustig.

Solar Update: ... a little Deja Vu?

The past 48 hours have definitely had a ring of Deja Vu going on in the realms of  our finicky Sun.

After weeks of silence, old spots 1944 & 1946- now renumbered 1967 & 1968- have almost rotated into direct Earth facing view and once again, we're in the middle of yet another epic light show!

In the past 72 hours approximately, we've had 12 M Class flares according to Solarham, and yet Watchers is telling us that there have been 17 M Class flares ALL from spot 1967, between 1am Feb first and 9am Feb second, plus an assortment of C Class flares from both 1967 & 1968.  1967 is currently Beta Gamma Delta, and 1968 is Beta Gamma.

Watchers notes 3 CMEs that have also been observed:
Three Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) were observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 09:48 UTC off the north, east, and southwest limbs. The CME to the southwest appears to correlate with a backsided filament eruption seen in STEREO A EUVI 195 imagery beginning at 08:25 UTC today.

NOAA has upgraded the risks to 80% for M Class (snort!) and 50% for an X Class flare.

Now here is where the "Deja Vu" enters the picture.  If you will remember to the last time old spot 1944 & 46 were almost directly earth facing, they were putting on a grand light show:

On Wed I published a Solar Update HERE, mostly focused on the X class flare from spot 1944 and the predicted upcoming geomagnetic storm caused by the CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) generated by the X Flare.
"NOAA is giving a risk 80% of M Class and 50% of X Class flares for today.... I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I give it 100% chance of an MClass flare today from 1944/6, and I expect we'll see 1946 evolve into Beta Gamma Delta in the next 24-48 hours as well.  We also have a good size Coronal Hole currently rotating into direct Earth View- the Solar Wind stream from that should reach earth Jan 12/13th."
....As I said in an earlier post a little while back about solar activity- for two years I have watched the same thing happen over and over again:  a major sun spot, throwing off huge flares, rotates into geoeffective Earth view and suddenly.... it just fizzles out.  Goes silent.  Then as it rotates around the western limb, then POW  it flares up again.

Same thing again this week.  Spot 1944 should of continued with strong M and even X Class flares.  It was so close to 1943 that they were almost touching.....  The fact that NOAA gave a risk of  90% for M Class and 50% for X Class flares, shows that that IS what should of happened.  And it didn't.  Instead, everything just went silent.

That is a quote from my Jan 11th 2014 article HERE

Sound familiar?  AGAIN?!?   AGAIN?!  I'm thinking that we are stuck in some sort of strange solar Ground Hog day loop, where the same solar events just keep repeating in the same pattern, as if stuck in a time vortex....

Well, yesterday was ground hog day again my friends....  the question is:  Will Sol repeat the same performance again this time around?   If it does I might just join Sol in a good ol' fashion tantrum instead of just questioning.

Oh and did I mention?  Just like last time round, we've also got a nice good sized coronal hole rotating into view as well.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm beginning to feel a lot like Bill Murray.....

Sun Dance continues

Our dear Sol is partying like it's still New Years Eve.  After a bit of a "quiet" spell - and as SDO and SOHO have been bouncing up and down like freakin yo yos with huge black outs of data, thats only conjecture- the sun is once again ramping up with lots of excitement.

in the past 48 hours we've had 4 M Class solar flares, one of which was an M9.9- which is just a hair off of being an X Class.  Spot 1936 had two M flares plus one on Dec 29th, but is just about to rotate over the limb and be not geoeffective to earth any more.  BUT.... the two today came from spot 1944, which is just starting to rotate into Earth view and it's a damn big spot. 1944 is so far just Beta, but is showing signs of getting all moody and stuff very soon.

This is 1944 just rotating into view

We currently have a geomagnetic storm going on- so the usual warning that your wireless printer is NOT being possessed, and not to throw away your GPS that keeps trying to send you to Timbuktu. It will all be better by morning.

but it did make for some nice Aurora pictures in the Arctic!

Sol Goes on a 72 hour Bender

Well guys, I wasn't going to be posting this morning, but upon seeing that we had an XClass Solar Flare last night, preceded by 4 MClass flares in the last 72 hours..... I dropped everything to write this up.

Beyond the 4 MClass and 1 XClass flares in the past 72 hours, we've also had two filaments rip off, both releasing CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections).  The last CME should give Earth a glancing blow on the 15th of this month.

The XClass flare last night- X 1.7 was a huge visual display (that someone captured on their personal telescope- image below), created a very big R3 radio black out on the sunlit side of earth when it happened.  The CME from this flare will NOT be Earth facing, not even a glancing blow.

We currently have 8 active regions that are Earth facing and two more regions that are now rotating into view- one of those regions is where the XClass flare came from last night.

UPDATE!!!!  We just had another MClass flare a few moments ago!! An M 1.3 flare- I do not have details yet and will post them when I get them.

X-Class Solar Flare
A major X-Class Solar Flare peaking at X1.7 was observed around an active region hiding off the east limb at 02:15 UTC [VIDEO]. This event was also responsible for a strong R3 Level Radio Blackout on the sunlit side of Earth. This region is currently seething with activity and will begin to rotate into view within the next 24 hours. Because of the sunspot location, any associated Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) should be directed away from Earth. Stay Tuned to SolarHam.com for the latest and most up to date Space Weather information.
CME Update: A bright Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) was produced, but as expected it was directed away from Earth. [VIDEO]
ALERT: Type II Radio Emission

Estimated Velocity: 2347 km/s
SUMMARY: 10cm Radio Burst
Begin Time: 2013 May 13 0208 UTC
Maximum Time: 2013 May 13 0219 UTC
End Time: 2013 May 13 0222 UTC

Description: A 10cm radio burst indicates that the electromagnetic burst associated with a solar flare at the 10cm wavelength was double or greater than the initial 10cm radio background. This can be indicative of significant radio noise in association with a solar flare. This noise is generally short-lived but can cause interference for sensitive receivers including radar, GPS, and satellite communications.
Alex Dzierba, Jr. located in Hawaii fought through the cloud cover and managed to capture the X-Class flare through his personal solar telescope. Great job and thanks for sharing!

Solar Update
Below is an updated image of the visible solar disk on Monday morning. Solar activity is now at strong levels thanks to one X-Class Flare and multiple M-Class events around a new sunspot rotating into view off the east limb. The X1.7 Solar Flare at 02:15 UTC was responsible for a strong R3 Level Radio Blackout, a 10cm Radio Burst (TenFlare) measuring 320sfu and Type II Radio Emission (Sweep Frequency Event) with an estimated velocity of 2347 km/s. A bright Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) was produced, but directed away from Earth. We will get a better view at the active region as the day progresses. GOES Solar X-Rays continue to detect several C-Class flares, each of which are centered around the new region. There will remain a chance for at least M-Class flares today. Other regions to keep an eye today will be Sunspots 1745 and 1746. Each have a Beta-Gamma magnetic configuration and could produce a moderate solar flare as well. With the rash of Earth facing Sunspots, the 10.7cm Solar Flux is expected to increase.

From the Watchers site: http://thewatchers.adorraeli.com/2013/05/12/two-m-class-flares-and-filament-eruption/

A new active region behind east limb produced powerful X1.7 solar flare on May 13, 2013 at 02:15 UTC. This event was associated with  strong R3 Radio Blackout Alert, Type II Radio Emission and 10 cm Radio Burst.
This was the strongest solar flare of the year so far.
Strong R3 radio Blackout alert signals possible wide area blackout of HF radio communication, loss of radio contact for about an hour on sunlit side of Earth and degradation of low-frequency navigation signals for about an hour.
Type II Radio Emission occur in association with eruptions on the sun and typically indicate a coronal mass ejection is associated with a flare event.

This new region is currently very active and it should begin to rotate into view within the next 24 hours. Considering its location any associated Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) should be directed away from Earth.
This new active region already produced two moderate M-class solar flare, registered as M1.9 at 20:31 UTC and M1.2 at22.:44 UTC.
There are currently 10 numbered regions on the disk. Regions 1745 and 1746 have Beta-Gamma magnetic configuration and are capable of producing more strong flares, and six more active regions developed Beta magnetic field and are coming into center of the disk in the coming days.
