Where has all the Power gone?

Yesterday 3 Mile Island nuclear reactor, home of the worst nuclear accident in US history, was shut down when a coolant pump failed.

Thursday's shutdown at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island was the second in as many months. Government regulators and plant officials say it poses no threat to public health or safety. Operator Exelon Generation Co. says no detectable levels of radiation escaped.
The failure of a coolant pump tripped a computerized system that shuts downs the reactor. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says once the reactor has cooled, plant workers can access the containment building and troubleshoot.
The plant also automatically shut down Aug. 22 while operators were manually shutting it down for repairs.

Of course they immediately stated that there is no danger of a leak.

You might not even blink twice after reading this article (the incident, which I might add, got way more air time in Canada and the UK vs the US), unless you happen to be keeping up to date on the US nuclear power situation lately.

If you have been keeping an eye on this topic, you might be scratching your head and wondering where they (the US powers that be) plan on getting their energy from in the near future.

The main stream media seems to be glossing over the nuclear power issue, or more importantly, glossing over the fact that more and more American nuclear reactors are being shut down almost monthly.  Dutchsinse put out an article back in August that applauded the fact that the PTB are shutting down reactors:
"The USA is revoking NEW nuclear reactors, and cancelling permits for plants when the come up for review — until the “nuclear waste problem is solved”...
Japan and Germany did the same thing this past year…. shut down the nuclear plants when they come up for review.
I started a petition to have the plants shut down when they come up for review… started that petition at the whitehouse a few months ago…. got a few thousand signatures ….
Move forward to today.. August 9, 2012 — they announce ALL nuclear plants (new ones not being built.. current plants being shut )"

Little news article have come out in the US media with news of shut downs and problems for a while now.

-In July, 4 east coast reactors were shut down: http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/07/18/utilities-usa-heatwave-idINL2E8II52W20120718

-In August, 5 reactors were shut down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD5Vl_o31eo  and HERE

-The huge San Onofre reactor in California was shut down last winter and has quietly slipped from the news and never been re-opened.

- In April the Diablo reactor was shut down because of tiny "jelly fish" (I kid you not)

Personally I would like to know what exactly is being done with all the worn out and defective nuclear facilities.  There are  quite a few articles that talk about power plants closing, but none that I can find that outline what steps are being taken to insure that these defunct plants are being closed in a truly safe manner.

Along with the closing down of so many nuclear reactors, coal plants are being shut down all over the US (don't get me wrong: I applaud this for the sake of our health and our environment) (don't be fooled: there is no such thing as "Clean Coal")

Natural Gas?  There are still huge debates and arguments about the pipelines.  Right now, the US imports the vast majority of it's natural gas from Canada (although one might ask why it is that they import AND export natural gas from/to Canada?)

Oil?  Not many new oil fields being opened in the US right now, and they are still importing a huge amount.

The US Government has done everything in it's power to insure that green energy is tied up in so much red tape that the "green energy" products on the market in the US for Solar and Wind power are such pathetic, lowest quality, poorly designed products that they are literally a joke.  Don't be fooled by the "green initiatives" and the bellowing voices from the Whitehouse that are telling you that they support green energy- that is a blatant lie.  There are exceptional green energy systems available on the world market, but you'll never see them in the US because they don't WANT green energy.

...the outright banning of the Keshe Foundation technologies is just the latest in a long line of American blackballing of REAL green energy.

Which leads me to the question: Where has all the power gone?

Where does the American Government expect to get the power to light up the USA?

MORE Oil?

I don't know, but I find it convenient that as more and more power sources disappear, more and more wars in the Middle East are started.

...Just Sayin'.

Thoughts anyone?

An Anonymous reader left this excellent summary of nuclear reactor events from last month, and I felt that the information was important for everyone to read:

  1. Shutdown of Nuclear Power/Reactors part 1

here is some of the info we talked about nuclear power and reactors. We had 10 different nuclear events reported in just 10 days. These are just a few as I was told that more are coming down and is not been reported by the media. Nuclear power will be totally eradicated in the next few months/years. I was told "they" will use the portals to get the waste away.

The kind of events below are Not normal and is taking place.

    BELGIUM

    (1) August 8, 2012 – Doel 3 nuclear reactor, Doel Nuclear Power Station - Shutdown

Doel 3 nuclear reactor at Doel Nuclear Power Station in Belgium was shut down on August 8, 2012 under the suspicion that one of its components might be cracked. “We have found anomalies,” said Karina De Beule, spokesman for the ACFN, the federal agency for nuclear control.

Doel 3 reactor will be shutdown until at least the end of August, but it is possible that the reactor could be shut down for good.

The station is located in the most densely populated area of all nuclear power stations in Europe, with 9 million inhabitants within a radius of 75 kilometres (47 miles). Construction of this plant started in 1969 and commission started in 1975.

     USA

    (2) August 12, 2012 – Maryland, Calvert Cliffs – Shutdown

Operators of the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Southern Maryland have shut down one of the two reactors there because a control rod unexpectedly dropped into the reactor core, causing a reduction in power generation, a plant spokesman said Monday.

The 793-MW unit was shut after a leak was identified Aug. 12. Since July, the NRC has been monitoring a gradual increase of unidentified leakage at the reactor and sought safety assurances from Entergy on those leaks.

    (3) August 12, 2012 - Connecticut, Millstone Power Station – Shutdown

Connecticut’s nuclear power plant shut one of two units on Sunday because seawater used to cool down the plant is too warm.

    (4) August 12, 2012 - Michigan, Palisades – Shutdown

Palisades is shut down because of a leak of coolant from the control rods. It’s supposedly fixed now but the NRC is bringing in three more inspectors.

    (5) August 14, 2012 - Minnesota, Prairie Island – Shutdown

One of the two nuclear generators at the Prairie Island plant was shut down because its emergency diesel generators suffered exhaust leaks.

    (6) August 14, 2012 - Minnesota, Monticello – Shutdown

The Monticello nuclear plant’s single generating unit, which had been operating at 10 percent capacity since last weekend, was shut down because of a leaking pipe inside the plant’s concrete containment structure, the company said.

    (7) August 16, 2012 – Michigan, Fermi – Loss of data

At approximately 14:58 EDT, a portion of the Fermi 2 Integrated Plant Computer System (IPCS) failed. This resulted in a loss of approximately 60 percent of data on the Safety Parameters Display System (SPDS)

  2. BELGIUM

    (8) August 16, 2012 – Tihange 2 nuclear reactor, Tihange Nuclear Power Station – Shutdown

Belgium has halted the 1,008-megawatt Tihange 2 reactor, as it has the same pressure vessel as Doel 3 at Doel Nuclear Power Station.

“I would like to remind that Doel 3 and Tihange 2 have been halted and do not represent any danger for the population, the workers and the environment,” Willy De Roovere, head of the FANC regulator agency.

     JAPAN

    (9) August 16, 2012 – No. 4 reactor turbine building,  Fukushima No. 1 - Radioactive water leakage

Tokyo Electric Power Co. discovered possibly highly radioactive water on the first floor of the No. 4 reactor turbine building at its disaster-crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant on Tuesday morning. The company believes the water leaked from a pipe that is transferring highly radioactive water from the basement of the No. 3 reactor’s turbine building.

    (10) August 18, 2012 – East Lothian – Torness nuclear power station – Fire

Fire crews were called to Torness nuclear power station in East Lothian early yesterday after a blaze broke out. The plant’s on-site fire team dealt with the incident, which involved lagging on a pipe catching alight at 12:25am. Managers insisted there was no risk to the public during the incident at the plant, operated by French firm EDF Energy.
